The Cruise

An 80-year-old couple booked a cruise to Europe.  After two days at sea, the captain came to the husband and said, “I just got a call from our home base.  Your wife never boarded the ship.  You left her back in Miami.”

The husband replied, “Oh, thank God, I thought I was going deaf.”

(Note:  We can see here how a joke can be like a poem.  The lines have two or three different meanings; the lines touch on some realities; and the joke twists our interpretation of everyday reality to get a good chuckle and to transcend some difficult experiences.

The joke also uses as few words as possible.

It is best to tell this joke when a conversation touches on the theme.  For instance, you could be having a conversation about a cruise, a difficult marriage, or a hearing problem.  Then you could interrupt the conversation with, “Let me tell you a little story about a couple taking a cruise.”)
